Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS) replaced four older CVOR radio navigation systems with more robust and less interference-prone DVOR systems. Therefore, in aviation navigation, it is essential to use modern and reliable systems that can meet current challenges.

Wind turbines benefit from similar location advantages as air traffic control facilities. Higher elevations and open areas offer ideal conditions for energy generation through wind power. However, these locations can lead to mutual interference: VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) beacons or other navigation systems are electromagnetically affected by the moving parts of wind turbines, which can impair the accuracy and reliability of navigation information.

Interference from wind turbines poses not only a technical but also an operational risk. Malfunctions or uncertainties in aircraft positioning can lead to safety risks in air traffic. Therefore, it is crucial to equip our navigation systems to be resistant to such interference.

Implementation of the modernization project

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy supported the modernization of radio navigation systems as part of a specific program implemented from mid-2021 to the end of 2025. DFS replaced the four existing CVOR systems at the Nuremberg, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, and Nienburg sites with improved DVOR navigation systems. These DVOR systems offer enhanced protection against interference from wind turbines, thus ensuring greater reliability and stability in navigation.

Simultaneously, the original VOR components at the Frankfurt am Main, Rügen, and Magdeburg sites were deactivated without requiring a conversion to DVOR. The DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) systems, which are less prone to failure and complement the navigation infrastructure, remain in operation there. This combination of different navigation components reflects a strategic approach that balances technical efficiency and operational safety.

Cargo handling volumes continue to develop positively. In the fourth quarter of 2025, member companies of the Association of Air Cargo Handlers of Germany (VACAD) handled 497,053 tons. “Recruiting staff remains difficult for ground handling companies. This is still largely due to the political framework, which, for example, leads to extremely long waiting times for security checks. Recently, however, there have been signals from politicians that this problem is finally to be addressed. The Airbus Helicopters H135 helicopter is both powerful and equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

The two other locations significantly expand the care network in Berlin. Christoph Berlin, based at the Marzahn Accident Hospital, not only operates with a proven team during the day, but is also the only intensive care transport helicopter in the greater Berlin area to offer a 24-hour operations center. Night flights are ensured by additional pilots, guaranteeing uninterrupted care.

At the Berlin-Buch base, Christoph 100 was commissioned in 2024. Equipped with a rescue winch, it primarily serves as a rapid emergency medical transport vehicle. The use of night vision equipment also enables flights in darkness, which is crucial, especially during the winter months with their short daylight hours. The cooperation with the Berlin Fire Department and the Bundeswehr Hospital makes this location a flagship project of civil-military collaboration.

In the event of a transfer to another flight operation within the group (this includes all companies in Germany in which DLH holds shares of more than 50%), the remuneration will be increased by CLH during the training phase and for a further three years after completion of the training up to the current gross monthly salary (basic salary, flight allowance and any LFA allowance according to the current working time ratio, unless this is lower than the average of the last 36 months; in which case the latter is decisive; parental leave or part-time work during parental leave is always taken into account with the fictitious full-time salary).

3.4. Reimbursement of moving costs:
In the event of a transfer to a different station than the current home base location, the relocation costs for the entire household will be fully covered under the exemption according to section 3.1, with a minimum lump sum of €7,000 being paid.

3.5. Payment of a mobility bonus (as an alternative to severance pay) in the event of a permanent change of employer with a change of station (due to expiry of time or waiver of the right to return according to 3.1):
To mitigate the consequences of a change of posting location, the employee (regardless of employment level) receives a lump sum of €50,000.

With nearly 3.7 million passengers in 2025, the airport achieved a new record result, as previously reported, representing growth of approximately 14 percent compared to the previous year. “We are now consciously focusing on a transition from this strong growth to stable, sustainable development,” explains airport managing director Ralf Schmid. Therefore, they have opted for a growth path that anticipates an annual increase of around five to ten percent in passengers. “Our goal,” says Schmid, “is not to maximize growth in the short term, but to stabilize it in the long term.”

The conditions for this are good. The proven Memmingen mix, which, in addition to classic holiday destinations, includes a considerable number of destinations, especially in Eastern Europe, that are primarily frequented by commuters, friends and relatives, provides a viable basis for further work.

Infrastructure development, automation and digitalization are the focus

The focus is now on infrastructure development, automation, and digitalization. The priority is to solidify processes and structures, streamline operational procedures, and create the infrastructure for sustainable growth. “The dynamic developments of recent years,” emphasizes Dr. Hans Reichhart, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Flughafen Memmingen GmbH, “must be harnessed constructively to achieve our goal of economic, social, and environmental sustainability.”

Infrastructure also contributes to achieving these goals. Further expansion measures are planned for the apron and the terminal. The tender process for a second ground handling service provider has already begun. Since January 1st, Memmingen Airport, together with its ground handling subsidiary ALLgate, has been supplying airline customers with aviation fuel. This task was previously performed by an external service provider. The long-term and trusting cooperation with the two major airline partners, Ryanair and Wizz Air, also contributes to strengthening the airport’s position as southern Germany’s leading low-cost airport, and this cooperation does not preclude collaboration with other airlines.

Marcel Schütz appointed Managing Director

Those in charge see digitalization as a key lever for successful further development. “There is great potential here that we absolutely must exploit in greater depth,” explains Marcel Schütz. The current authorized signatory will move up to the top management level as an additional managing director in 2026 (see short profile). The 41-year-old is currently responsible for operational management and business development, among other things, and serves as managing director of the subsidiary ALLgate GmbH together with Ralf Schmid. With the appointment of Schütz, who has worked at Memmingen Airport for over 19 years, those in charge are also signaling their commitment to continuity for the future.

Memmingen Airport GmbH continues to see itself as a stable and reliable partner for the region. As an economic and location factor, an employer with over 400 employees, and a mobility hub, the company intends to maintain its important role. “Many people are still unaware of the importance of easy access to skilled workers for sectors such as nursing, gastronomy, and hospitality,” explains Schütz. Memmingen Airport also plays an increasingly important role as an incoming airport, welcoming numerous ski vacationers from all over Europe in winter and many visitors to Bavaria and the adjacent Alpine regions in summer, which brings positive effects to the region in terms of tax revenue and added value.
