The German Aerospace Center (DLR) unveiled a new D328 cockpit simulator at the AVES Simulator Center in Braunschweig on May 27, 2025. The event was celebrated with guests from research, business, and academia. The exact replica enables comprehensive testing to improve flight safety and technology.
A new milestone in flight safety
At AVES, scientists have access to realistic cockpits. The new D328 cockpit simulator, an exact replica of the Dornier 328 cockpit, is designed to support research during flight tests. Dr. Holger Duda of the DLR Institute of Flight Systems explained that collaboration with Deutsche Aircraft to evaluate new technologies will be intensified.
Research and development with innovative technology
DLR plans to use the D328 cockpit simulator for research topics such as single-pilot operations, fly-by-wire technologies, and flight safety under icing conditions. Projects such as CAvIA and SPICE are funded by the German Aerospace Research Program “Climate.” The simulator center provides a platform for advancing sustainable developments in aviation.
D328 cockpit simulator: investing in the future of aviation
The approximately €2.5 million investment in the cockpit module includes original components and an advanced avionics system. The simulator, including the visual system and operator workstation, weighs approximately 2.3 tons. Together with the identical simulator from Deutsche Aircraft, synergies for innovative solutions are created.
Interdisciplinary research and collaboration
With projects like NewFLAire for the cost-effective use of fly-by-wire technology and other initiatives, the DLR is pursuing the goal of making aviation more environmentally friendly and safer. Through close collaboration with industrial partners, it is possible to develop practical solutions.
