The Supervisory Board of Dortmund Airport GmbH has finally confirmed the 2024 annual results. The airport recorded a loss of €1.8 million, representing an improvement of €1.8 million compared to the previous year. In addition, EU EBITDA increased to almost €9 million, the best result in the last 25 years.
Positive financial development despite challenges
Despite a loss of €1.8 million, Dortmund Airport‘s 2024 annual result represents a significant improvement compared to the previous year. The Supervisory Board confirmed this result at its June meeting following its audit by the auditing firm PKF Fasselt Partnerschaft mbB. Compared to 2023, which ended with a loss of €3.6 million, this result marks a positive financial development and the best result in the last 25 years. The airport also increased its EU EBITDA, the operating result according to European Commission guidelines, to almost €9 million, demonstrating the airport‘s stable operations in a challenging economy.
Passenger development at Dortmund Airport: Cautious optimism
Airport Managing Director Ludger van Bebber informed the Supervisory Board about the current passenger numbers, which recorded an increase of approximately 6.5 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year. Despite growth at the beginning of the year, the withdrawal of Ryanair and the reduced offerings from Eurowings in the summer flight schedule posed a challenge. This led to a slight decline in traffic in April and May compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, approximately 1.19 million passengers used the airport from January to May 2025, representing a small increase of 1.2 percent compared to the record year of 2024.
Expectations for the coming months
The management of Dortmund Airport is optimistic about the coming months. The peak travel season of summer, the new route connection with Wizz Air to Warsaw and Craiova, and the increased frequencies on existing routes contribute to an optimistic outlook. The administration expects these factors to provide positive momentum for the coming months, further stabilizing and possibly even improving passenger numbers. This strategic expansion of flight offerings demonstrates a flexible and adaptive approach to the current challenges in the aviation sector.
Challenges and opportunities
Despite current challenges, efforts to sustainably develop and strengthen Dortmund Airport‘s market position remain unbroken. While the reduction in services by larger airlines represents a spatial and operational constraint, it also opens up opportunities for stronger positioning of regional flight offerings and new routes. Through continuous growth and adaptation to changing market conditions, the airport underscores its role as a key player in German aviation. New partnerships and increased frequencies on existing routes represent long-term opportunities to enhance the airport’s attractiveness and stabilize passenger and economic figures.
As the operator of one of Germany‘s most important regional airports, Dortmund Airport is committed to maintaining stability and improving its economic performance. With a focus on strategic partner development and increasing route diversity, the airport offers a reliable network of connections that appeals to both passengers and business partners.
