Washington Dulles International Airport is expecting a record year of 27.25 million passengers in 2024. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority reports an 8.4 percent increase over the previous year, exceeding previous highs and reaching new heights in international traffic.

Significant increase in passengers

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority stated that 2024 was a remarkable year for the airport, as 27.25 million travelers used Washington Dulles International Airport. This represents an 8.4 percent increase compared to 2023, surpassing the previous peak in 2005. This increase highlights the airport‘s growing importance as a hub in the U.S. Capital Region.

New airlines and routes at Washington Dulles Airport

Six new airlines began operations at Washington Dulles Airport last year, including Swiss International Air Lines, which announced it had launched flights between Zurich and IAD in spring 2024. Other newcomers, such as Aeromexico, Avelo, Breeze, Frontier, and Sun Country, expanded flight connections. Established airlines such as United Airlines also increased their route and frequency offerings.

Strong growth in international traffic

According to the Airports Authority, international traffic reached new record highs with 10.38 million passengers, representing an 11 percent increase over the previous year. In addition, 17 new routes were added, with United Airlines operating ten of them. A total of 43 airlines offered connections to 137 destinations worldwide, including direct flights from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
