Current Traffic Update (as of September 2026)
Due to the announced 55-hour full closures of the A7 motorway and the Hamburg Elbe Tunnel (closure weekends: September 4–7, September 11–14, and September 25–28, 2026), there are massive traffic disruptions on the diversion routes in northern Hamburg.
The B433 road around the Krohnstieg Tunnel is particularly affected, as all feeder traffic to Hamburg Airport is routed through this area. Travelers heading to the terminals should allow for significant delays. Those traveling to Hamburg Airport from the south are strongly advised to switch to the S-Bahn line S1 to avoid missing their flights.
Background on the closure and accessibility of Hamburg Airport
The northbound tube of the Krohnstieg Tunnel (heading from the airport toward the Schnelsen-Nord A7 on-ramp) will be fully closed from 8:00 p.m. on October 7, 2016, until 5:00 a.m. on October 10, 2016. The closure is due to asphalt paving work. A diversion route is signposted. Travelers should allow extra time when leaving the airport. During the closure, the U55 diversion via Norderstedt will be in effect: motorists leaving the airport should drive along Zeppelinstraße, turn left toward Niendorfer Straße and Nordportbogen, and then turn left again onto Ohechaussee.
Subsequently, departing traffic will be routed onto Oldesloer Straße (B432), from where the Schnelsen-Nord entrance to the A7 motorway can be accessed as usual. Regarding the airport, this means that only the route leading from the terminals toward the A7 motorway is affected; there are no changes for traffic arriving at the airport. Should weather conditions prevent the construction work from taking place or require it to be halted, the following weekend – October 14 to 17, 2016 – has been scheduled as the alternative date.
