On August 22 and 23, 2015, Lufthansa Technik and Hamburg Airport are hosting “Airport Days Hamburg,” an aviation festival for the whole family. Under the motto “Discover the World of Flying,” up to 100 modern jets and vintage aircraft spanning a century of aviation history will be on display at the Lufthansa Technik site.
There is also a premiere: Eurowings is presenting its first Airbus A330-200 to the public in person for the first time – freshly painted in the airline’s colors of Burgundy, Sky Blue, and Cool Grey. The long-haul aircraft was handed over just this month. It is now awaiting its first mission for Eurowings and is currently being fitted with its new cabin interior at Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg. Final technical tests are also underway there before the Airbus A330-200 officially enters service with the Eurowings fleet in November.
The aircraft unveiled in Hamburg will be used for Eurowings’ new long-haul destinations on its maiden flight: service to Varadero (Cuba) begins on November 2. Before being handed over to Eurowings, the twelve-year-old Airbus A330-220 operated for Eva Air in Taipei (Taiwan). It is the first of several Airbus long-haul jets set to enter scheduled service with Eurowings.
Beluga – the “flying whale” pays a visit
Another guest from the Airbus family is also set to be one of the stars of Airport Days Hamburg: the A300-600ST, nicknamed the “Beluga.” This exceptional transport aircraft presents an impressive sight simply due to its unusual shape – and for 20 years, it has been Airbus’s most powerful workhorse. Entire aircraft components disappear into its cavernous fuselage, allowing them to be transported between the aerospace group’s various sites.
In Hamburg-Finkenwerder – Airbus’s largest North German site – the Beluga is an indispensable and frequently seen transport aircraft. At the Airport Days, visitors can now experience the “flying whale” up close. With its 56-meter length, a wingspan of 45 meters, 1,400 cubic meters of cargo space, and a payload capacity of up to 47 tons, the sheer size of this super-aircraft is impressive. The twin-engine cargo plane, of which there are only five worldwide, is used for transporting oversized loads. Airbus is continuing to rely on its super-transporter in the future and has already… Further development of the Beluga announced based on the new, more modern Airbus A330.
