First Airbus A330 MRTT for the Spanish Air Force in service

The Spanish Air Force’s first Airbus A330 MRTT has entered service with the 45th Squadron. It is one of three multi-role tanker and transport aircraft acquired by the Spanish Ministry of Defense in November 2021. The aircraft will operate from the Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base in Madrid.

Introduction of the Airbus A330 MRTT

The first Airbus A330 MRTT, unique among the modern generation of tanker aircraft, is now available to the Spanish Air Force. Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Aeronautics at Airbus Defence and Space, highlights the aircraft’s importance, noting its global leadership in tanker fleets. The entry into service of the A330 MRTT will provide Spain not only with strategic autonomy and enhanced interoperability, but also with expanded capabilities in projection, aerial refueling, and air rescue.

Technical characteristics and capabilities

Equipped with a state-of-the-art hose and basket system, the Airbus A330 MRTT boasts an impressive range of 16,000 kilometers and a flight endurance of more than 18 hours. Thanks to its large base fuel capacity of 111 tons, the aircraft requires no additional fuel tanks to successfully perform air refueling missions. This versatility allows it to carry up to 300 troops or 45 tons of cargo as a transport aircraft. Furthermore, the A330 MRTT can be equipped with a special patient transport kit to accommodate various stretcher modules and intensive care units.

Current progress and future plans

The second and third A330 MRTTs for Spain are currently undergoing conversion at Getafe, Madrid, to integrate the aircraft’s full range of functions. However, prior to conversion, the aircraft were already successfully used to transport military personnel and equipment. For example, in 2024, they participated in the Pacific Skies exercise and were used to evacuate Spanish nationals from Niger and Sudan.
