Under the title „From Tempelhof and Tegel to the World: The History of the Berlin Airport Company,“ Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) commemorates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Berliner Flughafen-Gesellschaft (BFG). For decades, the BFG shaped Berlin’s aviation industry and operated Tempelhof and Tegel airports.
The roots of the BFG (Berlin Airport Company)
The Berlin Airport Company (BFG) was founded on May 19, 1924, and began operating Tempelhof Airport. Tegel Airport was later added. According to its initial statutes, the Berlin Airport Company was intended to serve the „expansion and operation of the airport at Tempelhofer Feld and other air traffic facilities in Berlin.“
Tegel and Tempelhof
After the Second World War, Tegel and Tempelhof airports became important hubs for air traffic. The Berlin Airport Company not only enabled the operation of both airports but also contributed significantly to their development. Tempelhof was closed in 2008, followed by Tegel on November 8, 2020.
Merger to FBB
With the opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport, the BFG lost its original purpose. The BFG therefore merged with the FBB in 2021. Thus, the BFG, like Tempelhof and Tegel Airports, has become an important part of Berlin’s aviation history. The last meeting of the BFG Supervisory Board took place on June 28, 2021.
Demolition with perspective
In his complex historical overview, non-fiction author Anselm Weyer describes the multifaceted role of the BFG and its development. The document is rich in episodes, quotes from contemporary publications, and historical photos. The legacy of the BFG lives on in today’s FBB and revitalizes Berlin as a center of aviation.
Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) is proud to continue the legacy of the Berliner Flughafen-Gesellschaft (Berlin Airport Company). The history of BFG is an important part of Berlin’s rich aviation history and a testament to its constant innovation and adaptation to changing conditions.
