Aircraft noise at Berlin Airport: 30 measuring stations at BER fully operational

The expansion of the aircraft noise monitoring network at Berlin Brandenburg Airport has been completed. As of June, there are four new monitoring stations along the southern runway. They are located on Havellandstraße in Zeuthen, An der Fähre in Niederlehme, Am Bauerndamm in Genshagen, and on Straße der Einheit in Groß Machnow.

30 stationary measuring stations at BER document aircraft noise.

Overall, aircraft noise is now documented for all takeoffs and landings at BER using 30 stationary measuring stations. In addition, the airport company conducts mobile aircraft noise measurements on a monthly basis, rotating between different locations.

All measuring stations are equipped with special microphones installed several meters above the ground. Measurements are recorded every second, around the clock. From this data, the maximum noise level per overflight, as well as the continuous noise level per day, night, month, and year, are determined. All measurement data can be accessed online.

quieter aircraft are used

The measuring stations are also needed for collecting noise-related charges. Higher costs for airlines using noisier aircraft models provide an incentive to use more modern and quieter aircraft. This also gives priority to particularly low-noise approach and departure procedures, which in turn reduces noise pollution for residents near BER airport.

To further reduce aircraft noise in the surrounding area, the alternating operation of the two runways will continue until further notice. In June, takeoffs and landings will resume on the southern runway at BER.

Alternating use of the two runways at BER

Michael Halberstadt, Managing Director of Human Resources at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “The airport company is making intensive efforts to keep noise pollution for local residents as low as possible. The alternating use of the two runways since April contributes significantly to this. With the dense network of measuring stations and public access to the data, we are creating a high degree of transparency. This will help to further develop the issue of noise protection on an objective basis. This also includes our planned system of noise-related charges for airlines, which rewards quiet flying.”

Elite Jet Service GmbH – New maintenance facility at Friedrichshafen Airport

Elite Jet Service GmbH has operated a new maintenance base for jet aircraft at Friedrichshafen Airport on Lake Constance since March 1, 2021. Headquartered in Mönchengladbach, Elite Jet Service GmbH offers maintenance services for smaller jets at Friedrichshafen Airport. Since March 1, 2021, the company has leased aircraft parking spaces, office space, and storage facilities at the airport.

Managing Director Christian Böck of Elite Jet Service on the company’s involvement in Friedrichshafen

“We made a very conscious decision to choose Friedrichshafen Airport as a new and additional location for our maintenance organization. We recognize a high level of demand, which we will comprehensively serve with our qualified staff. The airport is an important location in the Lake Constance region, encompassing four countries, and the operators of the aircraft requiring maintenance are highly satisfied with the airport’s service and technical equipment. This will help us to develop the business successfully from the outset.”

From the perspective of airport managing director Claus-Dieter Wehr, there is also no competitive displacement with the already established company airplus Maintenance GmbH.

Highly qualified maintenance operator

“We have succeeded in acquiring an interesting addition to our recognized maintenance expertise at Friedrichshafen Airport. With Elite Jet Service GmbH, a highly qualified maintenance operator has come to Friedrichshafen, expanding our existing expertise to include additional aircraft types and thus broadening the market we can serve. We are very pleased that we can create further jobs for the region at the airport and expand its use in the maintenance sector. This underscores the airport’s importance as transport infrastructure and a key location for aviation companies in the region.”

COVID-19 antigen rapid tests on Lufthansa flight LH2058

The first Lufthansa flight to Hamburg, on which all passengers had previously tested negative for Covid-19, departed from Munich: LH2058, leaving Munich at 9:10 a.m., marks the start of rapid Covid-19 antigen tests on two daily flights between the two cities. After the test, passengers received their results quickly via push notification and email. All passengers on the flight tested negative and were able to continue their journey to Hamburg. All test results were also negative on the second daily flight, LH2059 from Hamburg to Munich.

Cooperation with Munich and Hamburg airports

In close cooperation with Munich and Hamburg airports, as well as the biotech companies Centogene and the Medicover Group’s medical center, MVZ Martinsried, the airline is offering its customers the opportunity to be tested for COVID-19 free of charge before departure on its two daily flights. Passengers who do not wish to be tested will be rebooked on an alternative flight at no extra cost. Boarding passes will only be activated and access to the gate granted upon receipt of a negative test result.

Rapid test at no extra cost

Alternatively, passengers can present a negative PCR test result that is no more than 48 hours old at the time of departure. Lufthansa will handle the entire rapid testing process. There are no extra costs for the passenger. They simply need to register in advance and allow a little extra time before departure.

Ola Hansson, CEO of Lufthansa Hub Munich, says: “We want to expand global travel options for our customers again, while adhering to the highest hygiene and safety standards. Successfully testing entire flights can be a key factor in this. With our test flights, which successfully launched today, we are gathering important insights and experience in the use of rapid tests.”

Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport GmbH, adds: “The trial run with rapid antigen tests on selected Lufthansa flights is a positive and important signal for the industry. Beyond the extensive hygiene measures that airports and airlines already have in place for passengers, these tests offer an additional level of safety. This could make cross-border travel without mandatory quarantine possible again in the future – provided corresponding international agreements are reached.”
