In September 2024, Frankfurt Airport recorded passenger traffic of 5.8 million, an increase of 1.2 percent compared to the previous year. Despite global crises and regional difficulties, the figures remain stable overall. International expansion shows a fluctuating but overall positive trend.
Comprehensive growth despite obstacles
In September 2024, a total of 5.8 million passengers flew through Frankfurt Airport. According to reports, this represents an increase of 1.2 percent compared to the same month last year. While domestic traffic increased by 1.3 percent and European traffic even grew by 2.6 percent, intercontinental traffic recorded a slight decline of 1.1 percent. The main cause is seen as political instability in the Middle East, which led to a significant passenger decline of 27.8 percent in this region. Positive trends in other long-haul markets such as China and India could not fully compensate for this.
Annual increase and comparison with pre-COVID years
In the first nine-month analysis of 2024, a cumulative 46.7 million passengers were registered at Frankfurt Airport. This represents an increase of 4.9 percent compared to the same period in 2023, but remains 13.8 percent below the 2019 figures. This moderate upturn shows that passenger numbers are gradually, albeit not fully, recovering from the pandemic years.
International developments: successes and setbacks
Fraport’s international airport portfolio companies worldwide are largely reporting growth. Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia, for example, increased its passenger traffic by 11.0 percent. In Lima, Peru, the number of passengers rose to 2.1 million in September, representing an increase of 13.2 percent. In contrast, the Brazilian airports of Fortaleza and Porto Alegre continued to report declines due to severe flooding and the resulting suspension of flight operations at Porto Alegre.

General development of Fraport airports
In the reporting month, the 14 Greek regional airports recorded an increase of 3.7 percent to a total of 5.3 million passengers. Antalya Airport in Turkey reported a 2.1 percent increase in passengers to approximately 5.0 million. Overall, traffic at the airports actively managed by Fraport amounted to approximately 19.4 million passengers, representing an increase of 0.7 percent over the previous year. Despite the regional differences, a predominantly positive trend is evident.
